The area of Intelligent Transport Systems is an important area in traffic management and intelligent systems with research spanning over the past decades. This project aims to develop and design an Intelligent Transport System that is able to model real live traffic data using information mined from the internet. This information can be in the form of live IP camera feeds, geographical information and events. A number of Computer Vision (CV) techniques and intelligent systems are used to extract sense out of these feeds. Being able to build an accurate model using this information means that the system is cost effective as it would not require any specialised equipment to operate. Furthermore, given an accurate model the research aims to use Orchestration methodologies such as Reinforcement Learning (RL) to orchestrate traffic control structures to improve traffic flow over the surveyed area. Finally, the research includes practical examples applied to the country of Malta. Why Malta? Malta is a perfect test bed for research. A 316 Km Squared island with a population of around 430,000 and the 7th most densely populated country in the world offers a set of extremely unique challenges. This is mostly due to an extremely high number of car ownership coupled with narrow roads and problems with public transport services. We can say that Malta is a researchers dream as due to its small size but very rich ecosystems less effort in terms of resources is needed to test micro and macro solutions that can be scaled up for bigger countries.
The aims and objectives of the project include
Information from different sources are aggregated including IPCameras and mined information over the internet.
An automated process that applies knowledge to the data in order to extract meaningful representation of the real world.
A process that models the representation of knowledge with the aim of representing the real world.
This process analyses the world model, learns what it can do through manual processes, then applies the correct procedures.
